Measuring 9km in length and just 400m at its widest point, Long Island takes its name from its narrow but thin appearance of land. The island offers over 20km of walking paths and 2,500 acres of lush tropical rainforest to explore. Many tracks lead to picturesque beaches and secluded lookouts for a stunning nature experience. Discover a variety of plant species and wildlife along the walking tracks or explore the nearby bays and coral reefs.
Just 150m offshore, Long Island is home to a coral reef which is popular for snorkelling and scuba diving. Although the island is easy to explore by yourself on foot, there are a number of tours and cruises which also allow you to visit a number of nearby coral reefs and other islands. Long Island enjoys beautiful tropical weather year round, with temperatures rarely dipping below 20°C making it the ideal holiday destination at any time of year.
Getting to Long Island is easy, you can catch a boat transfer from the mainland at Shute Harbour and arrive at the island within 20 minutes. For those visiting from further afield, you can also fly into Hamilton Island Airport and transfer by boat to Long Island. Alternatively, you can also fly into Proserpine Airport on the mainland and transfer directly to Long Island via seaplane or helicopter. Flight times to Hamilton Island Airport range from just over an hour from Cairns to almost 2 hours from Brisbane, 2 and a half hours from Sydney and 3 and a half hours from Melbourne.
Hamilton Island - Just like Long Island, Hamilton Island sits on the famous Great Barrier Reef and is just one of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays. A popular Queensland holiday destination, Hamilton Island is renowned for its spectacular natural environment, pristine beaches, warm sunny weather, native plants and animals and vast coral reefs. There’s plenty to enjoy both on and off the island including Whitehaven Beach, Great Barrier Reef cruises and a variety of snorkelling and scuba diving trips. There are also some fantastic facilities scattered around the island including fine dining, day spas and golf courses.
